Chapter Four: Jñāna–Karma–Sannyāsa Yoga — The Yoga of Knowledge, Action, and Renunciation
The fourth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, known as Jñāna–Karma–Sannyāsa Yoga (The Yoga of Knowledge and Renunciation of Action), reveals the divine origin and timeless transmission of spiritual wisdom as Lord Kṛṣṇa explains that this yoga was taught in ancient ages and renewed whenever righteousness declines. He clarifies that although he acts in the world, his actions do not bind him, teaching Arjuna how true knowledge transforms action into non-action by removing ego and desire. Kṛṣṇa describes how sacrifice, discipline, and selfless work, when illumined by knowledge, burn away the reactions of past deeds like fire reducing fuel to ashes. By praising wisdom as the supreme purifier and encouraging Arjuna to rise above doubt through disciplined practice, this chapter unites action, knowledge, and devotion into a single path leading toward liberation.
